Egerszalók: Cave dwellings

Rhyolit tuff stone of the upper layer of the rocks at the foot of Bükk mountains from the valley of Tarna river to Miskolc is easy to cut and carve, so it was much utilised by our forefathers. cellars, dwellings, stables, sheds were carved in it and the cultivated stone was used for building houses.

33 cave-dwellings existed in Egerszalók in the middle of the 20th century. Presumably the dwellings were made in 17-18th centuries. The last ones were inhabited even at the end of the 20th century.
The cave-dwellings at the end of Sáfrány street were bought by the local municipality and got local protection. They were renewed by EAFRD subsidy for preserving rural heritage in 2011.
Visitors may have an interesting time trip. In the Workshop of Crafts you can find tools used in agriculture and around the house, instruments of craftsmen. The enteriors of the other dwellings show furniture, kitchen tools of our ancestors from before World War II. from local collection.
At special occassions delicacies are baked in oven, there are craftsmen activities, candle making. The cave dwelling provide a nice scenery to summer performances, concerts and excellent venue of wine tastings.

Open daily from 9 am to 4 pm (depending on the weather!)
